WASHINGTON — Major musical performances formed part of nationwide celebrations marking the United States' 250th anniversary on Saturday, with entertainment integrated into daylong events on the National Mall despite weeks of changes to the original performer lineup and weather-related schedule adjustments.

Organizers of the federally backed Freedom 250 celebration said the National Mall program combined musical performances, military displays, tributes to service members, historical presentations and a fireworks finale as part of the official semiquincentennial observance. The White House said the July 4 program was designed as the centerpiece of a yearlong series of America 250 commemorations.

The entertainment schedule underwent significant revisions before Independence Day after several artists who had previously been announced for related Freedom 250 concert programming withdrew, saying they had not anticipated the event's political associations. Remaining performers included rapper Vanilla Ice, who publicly reaffirmed his participation in the days leading up to the celebration, describing his appearance as a patriotic performance rather than a political statement.

The changes prompted organizers to reshape the National Mall entertainment program while retaining music as a central element of the anniversary observance. Official schedules also featured military bands, choirs and ceremonial performances alongside other patriotic programming before the evening fireworks display.

Preparations for the celebration were also affected by extreme heat across the U.S. East Coast. Organizers delayed public access to portions of the National Mall, expanded cooling stations and misting areas, and adjusted event times after weather officials warned of dangerous temperatures in Washington. A temporary closure of the nearby Great American State Fair on Friday was lifted later in the day after additional heat-safety measures were implemented.

A stage incident during a rehearsal earlier in the week also prompted additional technical inspections after a section of staging fell behind performers. Event organizers said no injuries were reported and that further safety measures were introduced before the public celebrations proceeded.

The National Mall festivities coincided with other official anniversary events across Washington, including ceremonies at the National Archives featuring historical reenactments, readings of the Declaration of Independence and live musical performances. Officials said the broader America 250 program will continue through the remainder of 2026 with commemorative events across the United States.
