TAICHUNG, Taiwan — Japan and South Korea met on Sunday in a key preliminary-round matchup at the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship, with both teams seeking an important result in the four-team tournament sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC).
The game at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium formed part of a round-robin opening stage that also features the United States and Chinese Taipei before the competition advances to the semifinals and medal games later this week. Tournament organizers scheduled the event from July 10 to July 15 in Taichung.
Japan entered the contest with right-hander Suzuki Taisei named as the starting pitcher, while South Korea handed the ball to Cho Youongwoo. Early in the game, South Korea collected the first hit but neither side scored in the opening inning as both starting pitchers worked out of trouble. Official live scoring showed the game remained scoreless through the initial exchanges.
Japan's starting lineup included Keigo Okada, Hayato Akahori, Nanato Sakakibara and captain Kai Watabe, while South Korea opened with Kim Beomjun, Won Sangyoon, Kang Minwoo and Kim Jongwoo at the top of its batting order, according to official tournament records.
The championship is being staged under the joint organization of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association, USA Baseball and the Japan University Baseball Federation, with WBSC recognition. The event brings together collegiate national teams from Japan, South Korea, the United States and Chinese Taipei in its inaugural edition.
Japan's opening fixture against host Chinese Taipei had previously been postponed because of weather associated with a typhoon, leaving Sunday's matchup against South Korea as an important early test in the standings. Tournament organizers subsequently revised the schedule while maintaining the competition's July 15 conclusion.
Following Sunday's game, Japan is scheduled to face the United States on Monday in its final preliminary-round contest, while South Korea will meet Chinese Taipei later in the opening phase before the top four teams are seeded into the knockout rounds. The championship is set to conclude with placement games and the final on July 15.
