NEW DELHI — India's Parliament opened its Monsoon Session on Monday amid repeated disruptions after opposition lawmakers protested against the government's legislative agenda and demanded discussions on a range of contentious issues, delaying business in both houses.
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned multiple times after opposition members raised slogans and displayed placards calling for action over alleged irregularities linked to national examination paper leaks and other issues they said required immediate debate. Similar protests were reported in the Rajya Sabha, where opposition parties also sought discussions under rules allowing detailed deliberation.
The government has scheduled the session to run from July 20 through Aug. 13, with 19 sittings and a legislative agenda that includes several new bills alongside pending legislation. According to parliamentary records, measures related to taxation, small businesses and judicial administration are among the bills listed for introduction or consideration during the session.
Ahead of the session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged political parties to ensure constructive debate and the smooth functioning of Parliament, saying the government was prepared to discuss issues of national importance within parliamentary rules. Opposition leaders, however, said they intended to press the government over multiple matters, including examination controversies, regional concerns and other policy issues, while objecting to aspects of the government's legislative priorities.
Outside Parliament, security was tightened as protesters gathered in central New Delhi. Police imposed restrictions on demonstrations near the parliamentary complex, while authorities monitored rallies linked to student and youth groups seeking government action over examination-related grievances. Reuters and other media reported that police intervened to prevent marchers from approaching Parliament after permission for the demonstration was denied.
Despite the disruptions, the government introduced at least one bill during the day's proceedings before further adjournments. The Speaker repeatedly appealed to members to return to their seats and allow the House to conduct scheduled business, while opposition lawmakers maintained their protests.
The Monsoon Session is expected to continue through mid-August, with debates on government legislation and opposition demands likely to dominate proceedings as Parliament resumes on subsequent sitting days.
