LELAND, N.C. — A school activity bus carrying members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team overturned in North Carolina, injuring four people and prompting an investigation into the cause of the crash, authorities said.
The crash occurred Wednesday morning in Leland as the Cumberland County Schools bus was returning to Fayetteville after a seven-on-seven football scrimmage against South Brunswick High School, according to officials. Leland police said the bus was carrying 33 people, including 26 students and seven adults from Douglas Byrd High School.
Two students and two adults were injured in the crash, authorities said. Officials described the injuries as not life-threatening, and passengers were taken for medical evaluation following the incident.
The bus overturned near the intersection of U.S. 17 and U.S. 74/76, according to Leland police and transportation officials. Emergency crews responded to the scene after receiving a crash report late Wednesday morning, and the roadway was temporarily affected while responders assisted passengers and investigated the incident.
Cumberland County Schools said it was coordinating support for students and staff involved in the crash. The district said there were no reports of life-threatening injuries and that medical personnel were evaluating those involved as a precaution.
“We are grateful to report that there were no life-threatening injuries,” Cumberland County Schools said in a statement, adding that students and staff were being supported following the crash.
Authorities have not released a cause for the crash. Leland police said the investigation remained ongoing, and no details about possible contributing factors or any potential citations had been announced.
The incident involved a school activity bus transporting students from a high school athletic program, rather than a regularly scheduled school route. The district said it was working with emergency responders and families following the accident.
Officials said the injured passengers were expected to recover, with the district continuing to monitor the condition of those affected and awaiting the completion of the investigation.
