NEW YORK—United Nations member states concluded the ministerial segment of the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on Wednesday with a renewed commitment to accelerate implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as governments assessed global progress and acknowledged that significantly faster action is needed before the 2030 deadline.
The forum, held at UN Headquarters under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), brought together ministers, diplomats, international organizations, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to review progress on the 2030 Agenda under the theme, “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for a sustainable future for all.”
According to the United Nations, this year's forum included in-depth reviews of SDGs on clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, industry and innovation, sustainable cities and communities, and global partnerships. Thirty-six countries presented Voluntary National Reviews outlining their achievements, challenges and priorities in implementing the goals.
Delegates adopted a ministerial declaration at the conclusion of the forum, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the SDGs despite mounting global challenges. ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa said implementation required governments to move beyond isolated approaches to individual goals.
"With less than five years remaining until 2030, the challenge before us is not simply to move faster. It is to work differently. It is to work collectively. It is to work with resolve," Thapa said, according to the United Nations.
UN officials said discussions throughout the forum focused on strengthening international cooperation, mobilizing financing, promoting innovation and sharing national experiences to help accelerate progress. The meeting also featured hundreds of side events involving governments, researchers, businesses and civil society organizations.
The forum opened with the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2026, which found that progress toward the global goals remains uneven and insufficient overall, while highlighting examples of advances achieved through sustained investment, partnerships and targeted public policies. UN officials said the report underscored the need for renewed international commitment as the world enters the final years before the 2030 target date.
The High-level Political Forum serves as the United Nations' principal platform for reviewing implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all UN member states in 2015. The ECOSOC high-level segment concludes on July 16 with discussions continuing on broader international development priorities.
