SEATTLE — FIFA has confirmed that United States forward Folarin Balogun will serve a one-match suspension following the red card he received in the Americans' FIFA World Cup knockout victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, ruling him out of the Round of 16 match against Belgium while making him eligible to return if the team advances.
The decision, confirmed on Friday, means FIFA's Disciplinary Committee will not impose any additional sanction beyond the automatic one-match ban that accompanies a straight red card under the tournament regulations.
Balogun was sent off during the second half of the United States' 2-0 victory after a challenge on Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. The incident followed a video review and drew criticism from U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino and the player, who argued the contact was accidental.
Speaking after FIFA confirmed the suspension, Balogun said he had experienced "a rollercoaster" of emotions since the match but remained focused on supporting his teammates.
"I have to accept the decision," Balogun said, while maintaining he believed the challenge did not warrant a red card. He added that he would back the squad from the sidelines against Belgium.
Balogun has scored three goals during the tournament and has been a central figure in the U.S. attack. His absence leaves Pochettino with several options to lead the front line, including Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright, as the Americans prepare for their first knockout meeting with Belgium in the expanded 2026 World Cup.
Pochettino said after the Bosnia and Herzegovina match that Balogun was disappointed by the dismissal but pleased the team had progressed. Midfielder Tyler Adams also expressed confidence that the United States has sufficient depth to cope with the striker's absence.
Under FIFA regulations, a straight red card results in an automatic suspension for the following match, while the governing body's disciplinary panel retains the authority to increase the sanction if warranted. In Balogun's case, FIFA confirmed that no further punishment would be imposed, allowing the forward to return for the quarter-finals should the United States defeat Belgium.
