WASHINGTON — Americans marked the 250th anniversary of the nation's independence with parades, concerts, fireworks, historical reenactments and community gatherings across the United States over the Independence Day weekend, as federal, state and local organizers staged events commemorating the country's semiquincentennial.
The nationwide observance centered on July 4, with major celebrations taking place in Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and hundreds of other cities and towns. Official programs combined traditional Independence Day festivities with events highlighting the nation's history, civic institutions and cultural heritage.
In the U.S. capital, the National Archives hosted its annual Independence Day program featuring a ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence, historical reenactors, live musical performances and family activities. The museum extended its opening hours, allowing visitors to view the original Declaration of Independence as part of the anniversary observance. The National Archives said the event continued a tradition that has been held for more than five decades while recognizing the country's 250th birthday.
The National Park Service coordinated commemorative programming at parks and historic sites nationwide, encouraging visitors to participate in educational events focused on the American Revolution, military history, civil rights and the country's natural and cultural heritage. Entrance fees at national parks were waived on July 4 as part of the anniversary celebrations, according to the agency.
Washington also hosted large public events on the National Mall, while the annual "A Capitol Fourth" television special was moved to July 3 as part of the expanded anniversary weekend. Organizers said the concert featured musical performances before a separate fireworks display on Independence Day.
Elsewhere, communities held local parades, neighborhood festivals and historical exhibitions reflecting regional contributions to the nation's history. Maritime celebrations included the Sail4th 250 tall ships program in New York Harbor, while museums and historical organizations opened special exhibitions tied to the anniversary.
The anniversary was accompanied by extensive civic initiatives organized by America250, the congressionally authorized nonpartisan commission established to support national commemorations, alongside separate White House-backed Freedom 250 activities that promoted a year-long schedule of events through the end of 2026.
Officials said additional exhibitions, educational programs and public events connected to the nation's 250th anniversary are scheduled to continue throughout the remainder of 2026 as part of the broader semiquincentennial commemoration.
