HOUSTON — Morocco advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a 3-0 victory over co-host Canada in their Round of 16 match, ending Canada's deepest-ever run at the men's tournament.
Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi scored twice after halftime before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a stoppage-time goal as Morocco capitalized on its chances to secure a place in the last eight. The result eliminated Canada despite a bright opening spell in front of a large crowd in Houston.
Canada created several early opportunities but was unable to beat Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, whose saves kept the match scoreless through the first half. Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi both threatened as the Canadian side pressed for an opening goal, but Morocco's defense held firm.
Morocco broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Ounahi finished a move created by Achraf Hakimi. Canada continued to push for an equalizer, but Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute to double the advantage and effectively put the contest beyond reach. Rahimi completed the scoring in the eighth minute of added time after being set up by Brahim Díaz.
The defeat ended Canada's strongest performance at a men's World Cup. The co-hosts reached the knockout stage after progressing from the group phase and then defeating South Africa in the Round of 32, marking the country's best finish in the competition.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch was also without full involvement from captain Alphonso Davies, who did not feature after experiencing discomfort related to a hamstring issue in training. Marsch later said the player underwent an MRI that showed no serious injury, but the team chose not to risk him in the knockout match.
For Morocco, the victory continued the team's strong recent World Cup form following its historic run to the semi-finals in 2022. The North African side advanced to the quarter-finals, where it is scheduled to face France after the French side progressed from its own Round of 16 fixture.
Canada exits the tournament with its best-ever World Cup finish, while Morocco remains in contention for a place in the semi-finals as the knockout stage continues.
