NEW YORK — Broadway’s top honors were awarded at the 2026 Tony Awards, with “Schmigadoon!” winning Best Musical and “Liberation” taking Best Play as the ceremony recognized productions from the 2025-2026 theater season. The 79th annual Tony Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall on June 7, honoring achievements in acting, directing, design and writing across Broadway.
“Schmigadoon!,” based on the television series and featuring a book, music and lyrics by Cinco Paul, won the night’s highest musical theater prize. The production also received awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, bringing its total to four Tony Awards.
“Liberation,” written by Bess Wohl, won Best Play, defeating nominees including “The Balusters,” “Giant” and “Little Bear Ridge Road.” The award followed recognition for the production during the Broadway season, with the play centered on themes connected to the women’s movement of the 1970s.
Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” revival was the evening’s biggest overall winner, earning six Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play. The production also received honors for direction by Joe Mantello, featured actress Laurie Metcalf, and several design categories.
Among other major awards, “Ragtime” won Best Revival of a Musical, while its performers Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy received the leading actor and actress awards in a musical category. “Giant” earned John Lithgow the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Play, and Lesley Manville won Best Performance by an Actress in a Play for “Oedipus.”
“The Lost Boys, A New Musical” also had a strong showing, collecting four awards, including acting honors for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Shoshana Bean, along with design recognition. “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” won three awards, including direction and choreography honors.
The ceremony capped a Broadway season that included new musicals, revivals and plays competing for recognition from the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, which jointly present the Tony Awards. The awards honored productions that opened during the 2025-2026 Broadway eligibility period.
Following the ceremony, the winning productions remained scheduled as part of Broadway’s ongoing season, with theaters continuing performances and ticket sales for the awarded shows.
