KYIV— Russia launched a major ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, killing at least six people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian authorities said, in one of the largest missile assaults on the capital since the start of the war.
Ukraine's air force said Russia fired more than 40 missiles of various types, alongside attack drones, with Kyiv as the primary target. Officials said air defenses intercepted a number of incoming weapons, but several missiles struck the city, damaging residential buildings, commercial properties and other civilian infrastructure. Rescue operations were continuing as emergency crews searched damaged sites for possible additional victims.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the death toll stood at six, while dozens of people were receiving medical treatment. Authorities cautioned that casualty figures could change as search efforts continued.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the barrage ranked among the most intense ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. He said emergency responders remained deployed across multiple strike locations and called for additional air defense support from Ukraine's partners.
The attack came amid continued exchanges of long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine. Russian authorities separately reported a large Ukrainian drone attack targeting the Moscow region, while Ukrainian officials said the latest missile barrage underscored the continuing threat to civilian areas.
The full extent of the damage in Kyiv was still being assessed, and authorities said the situation remained fluid as rescue and recovery operations continued.
