JAMMU — The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir remained suspended for the third consecutive day on Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions, with authorities continuing to restrict movement along the route to ensure the safety of devotees.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board temporarily halted the yatra after weather authorities issued warnings of unfavorable conditions, including heavy rainfall and the possibility of landslides in parts of the region. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure amid concerns over the safety of pilgrims travelling through the Trikuta Hills route.
The pilgrimage begins from Katra in Reasi district and involves a steep trek through mountainous terrain to reach the shrine. Authorities have said the route will remain closed until conditions are assessed as safe for resumption.
The India Meteorological Department had forecast continued periods of heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting authorities to monitor weather developments and potential risks, including landslides and flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
The suspension of the Vaishno Devi Yatra came alongside restrictions on other major pilgrimages in the Himalayan region as officials responded to deteriorating weather conditions. The Amarnath Yatra was also temporarily suspended after authorities cited safety concerns linked to adverse weather forecasts.
Officials have advised pilgrims to follow updates issued through official channels and avoid attempting the journey until clearance is given. The Shrine Board has not announced a fixed reopening time, saying movement will resume after authorities determine that the track and surrounding areas are safe.
The Vaishno Devi shrine is one of India’s most visited religious destinations, attracting large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year. During the monsoon season, authorities regularly monitor weather conditions because heavy rainfall can increase risks along mountain routes.
As of Tuesday, officials had not announced the resumption of the pilgrimage, and the yatra remained suspended pending further assessment of weather and route conditions.
