WASHINGTON — U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance, the vice president announced on Sunday, saying both mother and baby were healthy.
In a statement posted on social media, Vance said the baby was born on July 19 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He said the couple's three older children were "overjoyed to meet their little brother" and thanked the medical staff at Walter Reed and the White House Medical Unit for their care during the pregnancy.
"We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning," the statement said. "Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother." The couple also expressed gratitude to the military doctors and White House medical personnel who assisted the family.
The birth marks a rare historical milestone. According to historical accounts cited by multiple U.S. news organizations, Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years, since the tenure of Vice President Schuyler Colfax in 1870.
JD Vance, who took office as vice president in January, and Usha Vance met while attending Yale Law School and married in 2014. They previously welcomed three children: sons Ewan and Vivek and daughter Mirabel.
The couple announced in January that they were expecting their fourth child later this year. During his time in national politics, Vance has frequently advocated policies intended to support families and encourage higher birth rates, making the announcement a notable personal milestone during his tenure in office.
The White House did not announce any changes to the vice president's official schedule following the birth. As of Monday, no additional details regarding the family's plans had been released publicly.
