LAS VEGAS—The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets will renew their cross-town rivalry on Friday when they open their NBA Summer League schedules, with both franchises using the exhibition contest to evaluate young prospects and recent draft selections ahead of training camp.
The game at the Thomas & Mack Center marks the first Summer League appearance for both teams in Las Vegas and is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET, according to the NBA schedule.
For the Knicks, the contest offers an early opportunity to assess several members of the organization's developmental pipeline following the franchise's NBA championship season. Rookie draft picks Jack Kayil and Tyler Nickel are expected to make their unofficial debuts, while returning prospects including Pacome Dadiet and Mohamed Diawara are also projected to receive significant minutes as New York evaluates players competing for roster spots and training-camp invitations.
Brooklyn enters the matchup with one of the league's younger Summer League rosters, headlined by recent first-round selections and second-year prospects. Guards Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Demin are among the players expected to lead the offense, alongside Drake Powell, Ben Saraf and Danny Wolf as the Nets continue building around a developing core.
Although Summer League results do not count toward the regular-season standings, the games provide front offices and coaching staffs with an extended evaluation period for rookies, second-year players and unsigned free agents. Performances in Las Vegas often influence decisions on standard NBA contracts, two-way deals and G League assignments before training camps open later in the offseason.
New York's Summer League schedule also includes games against the San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons and Golden State Warriors after the Brooklyn opener, with a fifth opponent to be determined based on tournament results. Brooklyn will likewise continue its Las Vegas schedule following Friday's contest.
While the exhibition features few established NBA veterans, the rivalry between the New York-area franchises adds interest to the opening day of competition. Team officials and observers are expected to focus less on the final score than on player development, defensive execution and individual progress during the early stages of the offseason program.
Friday's game is the first official Summer League contest for both clubs in Las Vegas, with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at the Thomas & Mack Center.
