LA LÍNEA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN, Spain — Residents of Spain and Gibraltar gathered to mark the removal of the border fence separating the British overseas territory from mainland Spain after a landmark post-Brexit agreement came into force, ending routine frontier checks and opening a new chapter in cross-border movement.
The fence was dismantled on July 15 following the implementation of a treaty agreed between the European Union and the United Kingdom, concluding years of negotiations over Gibraltar's future relationship with the bloc after Brexit. The agreement allows free movement across the land frontier while relocating Schengen immigration controls to Gibraltar's airport and seaport.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez attended a ceremony in La Línea de la Concepción, describing the occasion as a historic milestone. According to Spain's government, Sánchez said the removal of the barrier marked the fall of "the last wall on the European mainland" and signaled "a new era of coexistence and shared prosperity" for the Campo de Gibraltar region.
Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo also welcomed the change, saying the new arrangements protected British sovereignty while providing economic certainty and creating opportunities for the territory and surrounding communities. The Gibraltar government acknowledged that the transition could involve initial operational challenges as the new system is introduced.
The agreement is expected to benefit the roughly 15,000 workers who cross the frontier each day, many of them Spanish residents employed in Gibraltar. Officials from both sides have said eliminating routine land border checks should reduce delays for commuters, tourists and businesses that depend on cross-border travel.
Under the new framework, Gibraltar becomes part of the Schengen free-travel area for practical border purposes while preserving its constitutional status as a British overseas territory. Travelers arriving from outside the Schengen zone, including most visitors from the United Kingdom, will instead undergo Schengen entry procedures at Gibraltar's airport and port, including checks under the European Union's Entry/Exit System.
The treaty does not resolve the long-standing sovereignty dispute between Spain and the United Kingdom over Gibraltar, which Britain has administered since the early 18th century. Officials from both governments have emphasized that the agreement focuses on practical cooperation, cross-border mobility and economic stability rather than changing Gibraltar's political status.
The new border arrangements entered into force on July 15, with authorities in Spain, Gibraltar, the United Kingdom and the European Union overseeing their phased implementation.
