NEW YORK — Government officials, United Nations representatives, legal experts and civil society leaders said Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 must remain central to efforts to accelerate implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as the 2026 SDG 16 Conference focused on strengthening peace, justice and effective institutions through coordinated action for sustainable development.
Held at United Nations Headquarters, the conference was convened under the theme “Driving transformation and coordinated action for sustainable development” and was co-organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations. The meeting brought together ministers, senior UN officials, academics, youth representatives and civil society organizations to review progress and identify practical measures to advance SDG 16.
In opening remarks, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua said the world faced multiple overlapping crises while progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals remained seriously off track. He said the conference would examine how investments in peace, justice and effective institutions could accelerate progress across the broader 2030 Agenda and reinforce SDG 16 as an enabler of all the global goals.
According to UN DESA, discussions centered on three principal themes: assessing progress on SDG 16, examining the transformative role of peaceful, just and inclusive institutions, and strengthening partnerships and collective action. Civil society participants also presented the 2026 Civil Society Declaration on SDG 16+, while delegates explored ways to translate international commitments into national implementation.
Organizers said the conference aimed to identify practical solutions and encourage cooperation among governments, international organizations, academia, the private sector and community groups. The event also highlighted recent multilateral commitments, including the Pact for the Future, as a framework for reinforcing governance, accountability and institutional resilience.
The conference took place ahead of deliberations linked to the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), where governments are reviewing global implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. UN officials said outcomes from the SDG 16 Conference are intended to inform discussions at the HLPF and other intergovernmental processes focused on accelerating delivery of the 2030 Agenda before its 2030 deadline.
