SOUTHPORT, England—World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will enter the final round of The Open Championship with the lead at Royal Birkdale, putting himself in position to defend the Claret Jug after maintaining his advantage through 54 holes on Saturday.
Scheffler, the defending champion, stayed atop the leaderboard with another composed performance in challenging links conditions, remaining in front of a tightly packed group of contenders heading into Sunday's final round. Official tournament scoring showed several players within striking distance, leaving the championship undecided despite Scheffler's continued control of the event.
Among the leading challengers were Ryan Fox, Sam Burns, Cameron Young, Tommy Fleetwood and Si Woo Kim, while Australia's Lucas Herbert also featured near the top of the leaderboard during Saturday's play as positions shifted throughout the afternoon. A record-equalling 62 from Fox earlier in the day added further pressure to the leaders and tightened the standings entering the closing round.
Scheffler arrived at Royal Birkdale seeking his first victory of the 2026 major season after several near misses earlier in the year. The American rebounded from an unexpected missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open the previous week by opening The Open with a two-under-par 68 before remaining among the leaders throughout the championship.
The 30-year-old has remained the world's top-ranked player despite going without a victory since January, and another strong week has reinforced his consistency in major championships. A successful title defense would add another Open Championship to his résumé and end his winless run in 2026.
Tournament officials scheduled the final round for Sunday, when the leading groups will battle for the Claret Jug over Royal Birkdale's closing 18 holes. Scheffler is expected to tee off alongside his nearest challenger as the championship reaches its conclusion, with the winner to be determined after the final round.
