WASHINGTON — Organizers of the United States' Independence Day celebrations planned a record-setting fireworks display over the National Mall on Saturday as the nation marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, with hundreds of thousands of spectators expected despite extreme summer heat.
The pyrotechnic display, organized as part of the "Salute to America" celebration, is expected to feature more than 850,000 fireworks and special effects over approximately 40 minutes, according to organizers. If completed as planned, the show would surpass the current Guinness World Record for the world's largest fireworks display.
The event forms the centerpiece of a day-long national celebration in Washington that includes military flyovers, concerts and other commemorative activities. The National Park Service said public viewing areas would be available across the National Mall, surrounding memorials and parks, with security screening and road closures in place throughout the day.
Officials said this year's Independence Day festivities have been designated a National Special Security Event, placing the U.S. Secret Service in charge of coordinating security with federal and local agencies. Authorities advised visitors to arrive early, expect extensive screening procedures and prepare for transportation disruptions because of the anticipated crowds.
The celebration comes as a heat wave has affected large parts of the eastern United States. Organizers adjusted entry times and event schedules to reduce visitors' exposure to extreme afternoon temperatures, while officials urged attendees to stay hydrated and use designated cooling and medical stations. Reuters reported that dangerous heat had already forced cancellations or schedule changes for some Fourth of July events elsewhere in the country.
Preparations for the fireworks have involved multiple launch locations around the National Mall and the Potomac River. According to organizers and planning documents cited by media reports, staging the display required dozens of transport vehicles and crews positioned across several launch sites, making it substantially larger than a typical Independence Day fireworks show in the capital.
The National Park Service said the fireworks could be delayed or canceled if severe weather, including lightning or high winds, posed safety risks. As of Saturday, officials continued to plan for the display to proceed, subject to weather and operational conditions.
