ARIETTA, N.Y. — A pilot was killed in a separate aviation incident reported overnight after a single-engine aircraft crashed at a small airport in New York's Adirondack region, authorities said, as federal investigators began examining the cause of the accident.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said emergency responders were dispatched to Piseco Airport in the town of Arietta at about 7:09 p.m. Sunday following reports that a Cessna 182 had crashed. The pilot, who was the aircraft's sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to local authorities. The pilot's identity was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin.
Sheriff's deputies, New York State Forest Rangers, local fire departments and emergency medical personnel responded to the crash. Officials did not immediately disclose the circumstances leading to the accident or whether the aircraft had been attempting to take off or land when it crashed.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed it is investigating the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which leads investigations into fatal civil aviation accidents in the United States, is also expected to investigate and determine the probable cause after reviewing evidence from the scene, aircraft records and other available information. Piseco Airport is a public-use facility serving the rural Adirondack community, an area that sees seasonal general aviation traffic during the summer months. Authorities have not reported damage to property on the ground or injuries to anyone other than the pilot.
