LONDON — A by-election in the English constituency of Clacton will be held on Aug. 13 after Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned his parliamentary seat and moved to seek a fresh mandate from voters while facing scrutiny over his financial affairs.
The date was confirmed on Friday after parliamentary procedures formally set the contest in motion. Farage, who announced his resignation earlier this week, has said he will stand again in the Essex constituency, describing the vote as an opportunity for his constituents to judge his conduct rather than allowing what he called the political "establishment" to do so.
Farage resigned amid an investigation by Parliament's standards commissioner into a previously undeclared £5 million gift from businessman Christopher Harborne before the 2024 general election. He has also faced questions over financial support allegedly provided by longtime associate George Cottrell.
The Reform UK leader has denied wrongdoing, saying he has not broken the law and rejecting criticism over his financial disclosures. Parliamentary authorities have not concluded their investigation, and no findings have been made against him.
The by-election is expected to become an early political test for Reform UK, although several major parties, including Labour and the Conservatives, have said they do not intend to field candidates, arguing the contest is a political stunt rather than a conventional electoral contest. Their decision leaves uncertainty over the final list of candidates before nominations close.
Farage has argued that resigning and re-contesting his seat demonstrates accountability to voters. Speaking when he announced his resignation, he said he wanted "the people of Clacton" to decide whether he should remain their representative.
Critics have countered that the resignation does not alter the parliamentary process surrounding the standards inquiry. Under parliamentary procedures, investigations can continue following the election if applicable, although the inquiry has been paused during the campaign period.
Farage won the Clacton constituency at the 2024 general election, marking his first successful election to the House of Commons after several previous attempts. Since then, Reform UK has sought to build on its electoral gains nationally while presenting itself as an alternative to Britain's established political parties.
Polling for the Clacton by-election is scheduled for Aug. 13, with Farage expected to lead Reform UK's campaign as the party seeks to retain the seat.
