WASHINGTON — First Lady Melania Trump has expanded her public policy role during President Donald Trump's second administration, advancing a portfolio focused on child welfare, online safety, foster care, artificial intelligence education and humanitarian initiatives while maintaining a relatively limited public schedule, according to the White House and administration officials.
The White House says Trump has continued to build on her "Be Best" initiative through a series of policy proposals and public programs aimed at children and families. Administration officials have highlighted her support for the TAKE IT DOWN Act, which established additional federal protections against the non-consensual distribution of explicit images and AI-generated deepfakes involving children, as well as initiatives designed to expand opportunities for young people leaving the foster care system.
Among the administration's flagship efforts is the "Fostering the Future" initiative, which coordinates federal agencies and public-private partnerships to improve educational, housing and employment opportunities for foster youth. The White House has also announced funding proposals to support housing assistance for young adults transitioning out of foster care.
In June, Trump unveiled "Fostering the Future Accounts," a Treasury Department-backed program intended to establish investment accounts for children in foster care with an initial federal contribution. Speaking at the launch, the first lady said the initiative was designed to promote long-term financial security and independence for foster youth. Treasury officials joined the announcement.
The White House has also credited Trump with leading the Presidential Artificial Intelligence Challenge, an initiative intended to encourage responsible AI education for students while involving educators, parents and private-sector organizations. Officials say the administration has incorporated AI literacy into broader education and child development initiatives.
Internationally, the administration says Trump has continued efforts to support the reunification of children separated from families by the war in Ukraine and has promoted the "Fostering the Future Together" coalition, an international partnership focused on children's well-being and the responsible use of technology. Earlier this year, the White House announced she would preside over a United Nations Security Council session addressing children, education and technology during the U.S. presidency of the council.
Despite taking on a broader policy portfolio, Trump has continued to make comparatively few public appearances. White House officials have said that approach is deliberate, with the first lady concentrating on specific initiatives rather than maintaining a frequent public schedule. Her office has indicated that work on child welfare, digital safety and foster care programs will remain central to her agenda during the remainder of the administration.
