WASHINGTON — FIFA World Cup preparations are continuing across the three host nations despite heightened regional conflicts and geopolitical tensions affecting parts of the world, with tournament organizers maintaining that operational planning remains on schedule for the 2026 competition.
The tournament, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, Mexico and the United States, will feature 48 teams and 104 matches across 16 host cities, according to FIFA. Organizers have continued work on stadium readiness, transportation planning, team facilities and security coordination as the event approaches.
FIFA has acknowledged the wider international environment, with President Gianni Infantino saying the organization cannot resolve geopolitical disputes but that football can help bring people together. “FIFA can’t solve geopolitical conflicts, but we are committed to using the power of football and the FIFA World Cup to build bridges and promote peace,” Infantino said in a statement issued after a FIFA Council meeting.
Authorities in the host countries have continued preparations while monitoring potential security challenges linked to international tensions. FIFA and local organizing bodies have not announced any changes to the tournament schedule or host arrangements because of regional conflicts.
The 2026 World Cup represents the first expansion to a 48-team format, with matches planned across venues in the United States, Mexico and Canada. FIFA has said preparations in the host cities have progressed through infrastructure upgrades, venue assessments and operational planning.
In the United States, stadium operators have carried out specialized work to meet FIFA requirements. At the Dallas venue, officials developed a tournament-specific playing surface designed for World Cup matches, including adjustments for the challenges of an indoor stadium environment, according to reporting on preparations for the competition.
FIFA officials have also continued to coordinate with participating teams and host locations on logistical matters, including team base camps and tournament operations. The governing body previously released planning materials for team facilities across Canada, Mexico and the United States as part of preparations for the expanded event.
Security remains a central part of planning for major international sporting events, but FIFA and host authorities have not publicly identified any specific changes to World Cup operations linked to current conflicts.
With the tournament approaching, FIFA’s latest confirmed schedule remains unchanged, with the opening match set for Mexico City and the final scheduled for New York New Jersey on July 19, 2026.
