LONDON — Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for the 1983 international hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75, her family announced, marking the loss of one of the most recognizable voices of the power ballad era.
Tyler died unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal while receiving treatment for an illness, according to a statement released by her family on her official website. Her family asked for privacy as they mourned her death.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, in 1951, Tyler rose to prominence in the late 1970s with songs including “Lost in France” and “It’s a Heartache.” Her career reached a global peak with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written by songwriter Jim Steinman and released in 1983. The song became a major international success and helped establish Tyler as a leading figure in rock and pop music during the decade.
The track, known for Tyler’s distinctive raspy vocal style and dramatic production, topped charts in several countries and became closely associated with major cultural moments, including renewed attention during eclipse events. Tyler also recorded “Holding Out for a Hero,” which became another widely recognized song through its inclusion in the soundtrack of the film “Footloose.”
Tyler continued performing and recording music for decades after her breakthrough. She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music in 2022. Her final studio album, “The Best Is Yet To Come,” was released in 2021.
In the months before her death, Tyler had experienced serious health issues. Reports said she was hospitalized in Faro, Portugal, where she had a home, and underwent emergency intestinal surgery before later receiving treatment for complications.
Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973. Her family later announced plans for funeral services and a public celebration of her life in Wales, with requests for charitable donations in her memory.
